Four Ways To Declutter Your New Kitchen Design

Posted on: 20 February 2019

A clean, uncluttered kitchen can help you to feel organised and calm while cooking or working. Clutter is not only about what you've left sitting on the bench, but it's also about design. So what elements can help to create a peaceful, streamlined space?

Fit A Glass Splashback

One option is to install a glass splashback. Even the thinnest tile grout creates multiple individual crisscross lines which can add to the visual clutter of a kitchen. A glass splashback provides a grout-free zone, just a clean expanse of glass. Whether it is installed as one or more pieces depends on the splashback size. In any case, multiple sections are usually connected with transparent silicone, creating a seamless join. Splashbacks can be back-painted virtually any hue to match the rest of the kitchen so you can bring colour into the design as well.

Lay Large Tiles

If you do want to go with tiles, however, to achieve the cleanest effect possible, you could go with large rectified tiles. Because the edges on these tiles have been cut flat with precision machines, they can be laid almost abutting each other. This makes the grout lines extremely fine. For the most seamless surface, choose a grout colour that matches the tile, which will render the joins very minimal. Larger tiles are better also just because the lines are then less frequent.

Install Discreetly Handled Cabinetry

Another way to remove design clutter and to create a streamlined look is to install cabinetry with either discreet or no handles. Push latches, one option, are small magnetic or mechanical fixtures that are fitted to the door insides. Just a simple push will spring the doors open and another will close them. Another possibility is integrated handles, which are grooves or channels carved into the cabinet design across the top or bottom edge. Nothing protrudes, and the embedded channel provides a grip to open the door. A third way to minimise handles is to fit edge pulls, typically of metal construction, to the inside door edge. These are often mounted to the top side of lower cabinetry. The discreet pull that overhangs the door provides the leverage to open it.

Use A Low Contrast Colour Scheme

Another way to declutter is through colour. Uniform or similarly coloured and toned surfaces create a continuous flow across the kitchen space. A light-toned theme will keep the area bright as well. Contrasting colours, though, break up an area into discrete blocks of colour. Dark cabinetry against pale walls, for example, can have this effect. While such a design can provide an interesting contrast, the distinction adds to the overall visual detail. Which you choose depends on your overall design goals.

Custom made kitchen designs provide an opportunity to create your own peaceful, zen kitchen. To do this, just try to keep all design elements as streamlined as possible.

Changing Your Home To A Modern Look

There is nothing more exciting than renovating a home. However, when the home is still decorated with paisley wallpaper and orange tiles of the 1960s, then you have a whole lot of work ahead of you. I recently undertook a renovation task of mammoth proportions as I wanted to drag my nana's property into the latest century. My blog is designed to help other homeowners who have a massive modernization task ahead. Not only will I post about what's trending in modern looks, but I'll also post about behind the scenes factors you need to check like old wiring and plumbing. You can turn a shagadelic orange residence into a gleaming finish of chrome and light, you just need to know where to start.
