Benefits Of Powder Coated Aluminium For Your Pergola

Posted on: 22 February 2019

If you're planning a new pergola, you would have noticed the range of materials available. One possibility is powder-coated aluminium, which provides several advantages.

Durable And Strong

Aluminium is an ideal material for pergolas that need to be tough enough to withstand harsh outdoor weather conditions. It originates from bauxite, which is mined from the earth. The alumina from the bauxite is processed with other elements specifically added to create a strong, light and durable aluminium. The outer layer of aluminium oxide that forms upon exposure to oxygen naturally protects the surface from rust. Aluminium is thus both strong and light, being lighter than both timber and steel, and naturally anti-corrosive. Its lightness makes for easier construction.

A powder-coating process provides yet another layer of protection to the aluminium. A finely ground mixture of resin and pigments is sprayed onto the metal. The aluminium is then placed in a curing oven and heated to extreme temperatures. Once the powder melts, it flows over the surface, sealing it with a tough, extra-durable finish.

Variety Of Design Options

A further advantage of powder-coated aluminium is the range of colours available. The powder coating process not only creates a protective barrier, but it also decorates the aluminium. The coloured pigments are available in a range of tones, and the smooth, hardened coating resists chipping, fading and scratching. You might also have a choice of finishes: gloss, satin, matte or metallic, and possibly different textures. All the options should make it easier to match the aluminium colour on the pergola to your home or backyard. The particular range on offer, though, does vary with different manufacturers.

Maintenance

An additional benefit of aluminium is the lack of maintenance required; all it will need is a wipe down every now and then. Avoid harsh chemicals that can degrade the powder-coated surface over time. Unlike unpainted timber, aluminium does not require any particular kind of regular staining or resealing procedures. Aluminium will not rot like wood. And the durable, long-lasting powder-coated surface will not need regular repainting either.

Overall, powder-coated aluminium is an excellent material for pergolas. It is incredibly durable and anti-corrosive. Because it withstands weather so well, it is particularly suited to harsh coastal conditions. Its light character also makes for simpler construction for pergola builders. Also, because of the vast range of powder-coated colours available, you should be able to match the pergola to your home. Finally, you won't need to be bothered with tedious maintenance rituals.

I recently undertook a renovation task of mammoth proportions as I wanted to drag my nana's property into the latest century. My blog is designed to help other homeowners who have a massive modernization task ahead. Not only will I post about what's trending in modern looks, but I'll also post about behind the scenes factors you need to check like old wiring and plumbing. You can turn a shagadelic orange residence into a gleaming finish of chrome and light, you just need to know where to start.
