How to Plan Your Ideal Lounge
Posted on: 26 February 2019
The lounge will be the heart of your house where you and your family will gather together to talk, watch television or entertain friends. It makes sense to put some thought into planning the layout of this room.
Seating
Think about how many will be using the room (not just your family but also your visitors). You will need enough armchairs or sofas to accommodate everyone and will need to position them so that people can face each other and be sociable.
You will also want to think about extra seating that can be brought in if you have extra people in the room. Some lightweight chairs that can be stored elsewhere and brought in as needed are ideal. You could also think about using beanbags as extra seating as they are particularly popular with children.
Television
Not everyone uses the lounge as the television room, but most people still do. In this case, you will probably want the television to be the main focal point of the room with seating arranged so that everyone can watch without straining their eyes.
Tables
You will probably want coffee tables so that your family has somewhere to put hot or cold drinks and perhaps something stronger, particularly if you have guests. It is worth thinking about how many tables you need and where to put them. Ideally, there would be a surface near every seat.
Storage
Try to avoid cluttering up your living room; it can make the room too busy and make it harder to relax. You will need somewhere to keep items that you use in the room, such as remote controls; otherwise, hidden shelves and drawers in coffee tables and footstools will allow you to keep things at hand but without displaying them.
Spacing
Finally, remember to leave enough room between each item of furniture so that people can actually get through. Cluttering the room with too many tables and chairs can create a maze with only one way to get from one end of the room to another. Leave plenty of room, at least half a metre, between pieces of furniture to allow people to move without bashing their shins.
A little careful advance planning will ensure that your lounge is a place where your family will enjoy hanging out and being together and will be a room where you can truly relax and kick your feet up.
