A Guide to Residential Plantation Shutters

Posted on: 22 February 2021

Residential plantation shutters are horizontal louvres that are installed within a frame parallel to each other. The louvres are usually angled or slanted for two reasons: to help achieve privacy and to help control the amount of light getting into your home.

Residential plantation shutters can be used for windows and doors. When used for windows, they can be installed on the exterior or interior side. On the other hand, when used for doors, they are mostly installed on interior doors. Here are some other important things to note about residential plantation shutters:

Why Would You Want to Use Plantation Shutters?

Aesthetic value

You might have visited a friend's house or even seen plantation shutters in a house in a movie and thought they were elegant and classy. Talk to your interior designer to find out how you can implement the plantation shutters in your home. The interior designer might be the best person to guide you on things like materials and features.

Ability to control light and airflow while still enjoying privacy

You can either come across moveable or fixed plantation shutter louvres. Fixed louvres may not offer you the ability to control light or airflow, but they may provide privacy. Moveable louvres will help you shut natural light out completely or angle it towards the floor.

Ability to protect your windows

Plantation shutters installed on the exterior side of your windows serve the purpose of protection, meaning the louvres might be mostly fixed. This does not mean that you cannot come across moveable louvres on plantation shutters meant for the exterior side of your windows; you may also want to control the amount of light and airflow. They protect your window panes from damage caused by debris during storms, burglars or children when playing. They also have an aesthetic role on the exterior side of your house.

What to Consider When Purchasing Residential Plantation Shutters

First, consider your plantation shutter needs; these are highlighted above.

Secondly, think about the material of the plantation shutters. The most common material is timber, but you might also come across PVC, aluminium and glass. You might find that based on where the plantation shutters are being used and your aesthetic needs, some material may be more suitable than others. For example, plantation shutters used on the exterior side of your house might be made of aluminium since the metal can withstand damaging natural and artificial elements.

Thirdly, let an interior designer who specialises in plantation shutters help or guide you to avoid making costly mistakes.
